About us
About us
No longer quite so young, but young at heart – these are the people behind Junge Menschen für Afrika e.V. (“Young People for Africa”). We have been a registered association since 2006, supported by around 140 members.
What began with personal experiences in Rwanda grew, through many German–Rwandan friendships, into an association that was founded in 2006 after winning the “startsocial” competition. We have been supporting projects in Kirinda since 2003.
The association is funded by its around 140 members and by private donations, which are collected in many different ways: donations instead of birthday presents, the sale of Rwandan products at markets in Germany, sports and music events for a good cause, and project-related donations.
What we do
We initiate and support projects in education, agriculture and infrastructure.
- We arrange many school sponsorships for pupils in the upper grades.
- We inform and raise awareness through events and public relations in Germany and in Rwanda.
- We accompany the projects on the basis of an intensive, lively partnership between cultures, on an equal footing.
- The projects are carried out by the local population with the help of local experts.
The main goal of all projects is for the local population to take on responsibility.
To make sure the projects succeed, our Rwandan coordinator Francine Musabeyezu supports all projects on site and reports to us regularly.
About Rwanda
Rwanda is a beautiful country in East Africa, bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Tanzania and Burundi. It is often known for the genocide of 1994. This sad chapter frequently overshadows the view of a country that has much more to offer: deep green valleys and hills, Lake Kivu, the Virunga volcanoes, Nyungwe National Park and friendly people.
The economy and tourism are growing, and coffee and tea are important exports. Nevertheless, a large part of the population lives below the poverty line.
- Capital: Kigali
- Area: 26,338 km² (smaller than the German state of Brandenburg)
- Population: approx. 12 million
Our goals
-
Respect
We stand up for human dignity – regardless of the ethnicity, religion, nationality and beliefs of the people involved.
-
Help
We support disadvantaged people in Rwanda, especially women and children without parents, so that they can lead more self-determined lives.
-
Learning
We promote educational opportunities for children and young people in the Kirinda region.
-
Exchange
We promote intercultural dialogue between Germany and Rwanda and inform people in both countries through events and public relations.
