Agricola: modern farming at the I.P.K.
Mushrooms, new vegetable varieties and bees: students learn modern farming and earn extra money towards their school fees.
The “IPK School Modern Agriculture Project” (ISMAP) was launched at the I.P.K. secondary school in spring 2015.
It focuses on growing mushrooms and vegetable varieties that were previously unknown in the region, along with intensive training for students in the senior classes. A bee project has also been running since 2018.
Why it matters
The students gain additional qualifications, and the food in the school canteen improves. Surplus produce is sold at the market or passed on cheaply to the canteen – so that the project can pay for itself in the long term. And some students are able to pay their school fees with the extra income.
The board has decided to expand this successful project further.
