Hot off the needle: the tailoring apprenticeship
A year of free training as a tailor – with their own sewing machine as a first step towards self-employment.
At the sewing workshop in Kirinda, young women and men are trained as tailors free of charge. Two tailors from Kirinda introduce them to the craft at the sewing machines.
The training
For one year, Monday to Friday from 8 am to 2 pm, the apprentices learn how to use a sewing machine and how to work from sewing patterns. The product range includes school uniforms, clothing, bags and much more. The training is meant to give the graduates from Kirinda and the surrounding area a livelihood.
The 2022/23 training year began in September 2022. Unfortunately there were only 12 places for almost 40 applications.
Our support
- We pay for the sewing machines. The apprentices pay half of the cost back to the association as a loan during their training – which has worked wonderfully so far.
- We cover the salaries of the two teachers and the rent for the workshop.
- We order bags from the graduates and sell them at Christmas markets and bazaars.
