Builders wanted: the construction department
Practical vocational training in construction in the senior classes at the I.P.K. – to help tackle youth unemployment in the countryside.
With the construction branch in the senior classes of the secondary school in Kirinda, we are helping to tackle youth unemployment in this very rural region.
Aims
- To give young people in the region vocational training with good prospects.
- To train qualified master builders, both women and men.
- To improve infrastructure in rural areas.
- To support small local construction businesses in Kirinda.
How it started
The new department needed an additional building, a workshop and teaching materials – around €15,000 in start-up capital altogether. The money was raised through benefit dinners, fundraising campaigns and support from the Mirja Sachs Stiftung, the Luxstiftung and many private donors. When the semester began on 23 January 2017, the first class started with 36 students.
Since 2019 there have been three classes. In November 2022, all 29 Level 5 students passed the national exam.
